چکیده
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I have had two wonderful years at Vanderbilt University. I would like to use this chance to express my gratitude to those who have helped me during this period of time. First, I want to thank my advisor, Dr. Haoxiang Luo. His support and wealth of knowledge guided me through the obstacles in my research. He was also willing to share his experience as a graduate student with me to help me choose the best career path. When I was making one of hardest decisions in my life, switching from the PhD program to the Master program, he was there providing suggestions and support. I As a foreigner, it was not easy for me to fit in the life here. But I was lucky to have Suzanne Weiss and my friend Qian Zhang with me all the way. Moreover, I owe my gratitude to all my previous and current labmates They not only helped me with my research, but also made my life easier. Being a teaching assistant for two years was a wonderful experience. I am sincerely appreciative to the Mechanical Engineering Department for the finical support. Last but not least, I offer my most sincere thanks to my parents and my sister. Their love and support means the world to me! ii CONTENTS

A Fast Immersed Boundary Fourier Pseudo-spectral Method for Simulation of the Incompressible Flows
Abstract The present paper is devoted to implementation of the immersed boundary technique into the Fourier pseudo-spectral solution of the vorticity-velocity formulation of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The immersed boundary conditions are implemented via direct modification of the convection and diffusion terms, and therefore, in contrast to some other similar ...
متن کاملAn immersed boundary method based on discrete stream function formulation for two- and three-dimensional incompressible flows
An immersed boundary method is proposed in the framework of discrete stream function formulation for incompressible flows. In order to impose the non-slip boundary condition, the forcing term is determined implicitly by solving a linear system. The number of unknowns of the linear system is the same as that of the Lagrangian points representing the body surface. Thus the extra cost in force cal...
متن کاملA versatile sharp interface immersed boundary method for incompressible flows with complex boundaries
A sharp interface immersed boundary method for simulating incompressible viscous flow past three-dimensional immersed bodies is described. The method employs a multi-dimensional ghost-cell methodology to satisfy the boundary conditions on the immersed boundary and the method is designed to handle highly complex three-dimensional, stationary, moving and/or deforming bodies. The complex immersed ...
متن کاملImmersed boundary methods for the numerical simulation of incompressible aerodynamic and fluid-structure interactions
In this work three branches of Immersed Boundary Methods (IBM) are described and validated for incompressible aerodynamics and fluid-structure interactions. These three approaches are: Cut Cell method, Vortex-Penalization method and Forcing method. Two first techniques are validated for external bluff-body flows and the last one is used for fluid-structure interactions. The paper confirms the a...
متن کاملA second-order immersed boundary method for the numerical simulation of two-dimensional incompressible viscous flows past obstacles
We present a new cut-cell method, based on the MAC scheme on cartesian grids, for the numerical simulation of two-dimensional incompressible flows past obstacles. The discretization of the nonlinear terms, written in conservative form, is formulated in the context of finite volume methods. While first order approximations are used in cut-cells the scheme is globally second-order accurate. The l...
متن کاملTwo Phase Level-Set/Immersed-Boundary Cartesian Grid Method for Ship Hydrodynamics
Recent progress at IIHR on the development of CFDShip-Iowa version 6 is presented. Current focus is on a sharp interface Cartesian grid method for the large-eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent two-phase incompressible flows. In this method, the level set formulation for two-phase incompressible flows is adopted. The density and pressure jump conditions across the interface (the latter due to sur...
